The Corke Art Gallery is proud to present an Exhibition of the work of Martin Greenland winner of the Liverpool John Moores 24 Painting Prize in 2006.
Inventions & Reinventions is a collection of imagined landscapes which reference the rural environment’s splendour and the changes wrought by the hand of human activity and the passage of time. The paintings are not literal interpretations. They are refashioning of places visited that have struck a chord, or they are places which have evolved on the canvas to become illusions of places which have no known existence, in which every element is an invention. Freed from the inevitable stranglehold of reproducing reality and what is before him, Greenland creates worlds, visualised in his imagination and brought to life on canvas in many layers that convey what landscape could or should be.
The exhibition features English landscapes, illuminated with continental light, with features enhanced by vibrant colour and saturation whilst other paintings in the show feature restricted use of light and colour and draw the viewer into a scene that demands considered appreciation long enough for the eye to adjust to the subtle elements represented in the painting.
Greenland’s roots are deep and broad, his work references symbolism to Surrealism via Realism and Romanticism and he paints ideas and feelings about the time and place we find ourselves - ever changing and yet often constant.
Since winning the highly acclaimed National John Moores Painting Prize in 2006, Greenland has continued to exhibit extensively throughout the UK and is now enjoying new successes internationally.

Independents Biennial Pop Up Show
Lisa Cole Kronenburg
Selected Works - Old & New
Gallery Open Thu - Sun 2pm - 5.30pm
Lisa Cole Kronenburg will be showing a selection of work at the Corke Gallery including several new landscape paintings and works on paper.
The light, mood and atmosphere in Lisa’s work has that quiet, charged hum of meditation – the landscapeas a metaphor for emotional and spiritual states.
The new landscapes show the terrain becoming more layered and undulating with allusions to mountains, river systems, furrowed fields and islands.
However, the real subject matter is the nuanced feelings aroused by the landscape – the correspondence that the viewer perceives between internal and external worlds.

Paul Bennett
Lands & Seas
Biennial Pop Up Exhibition
Thur 4 - Sun 14 October 2012
Described as abstracted and expressional,
Paul Bennett's captivating paintings create a sense of intimacy and isolation whilst simultaneously leaving the subject open to interpretation.
Bennett aims above all to provoke emotional reactions rather than drawing too heavily on representational accuracy.
Paul's expressive brushwork and dramatic palette aims to captures the immensity and ethereal quality of weather through the use of rich textures, multiple layers and poured paint he endows his images with a tactile nature and his powerful colours capture the intensity of his chosen subject.
These dramatic representations of the uncontrolled aspects of weather, entwined with an intense emotion are undeniably beautiful.

Dreams & Reality by Ahmed ElHassan
Sat 16 - Sat 30 June 2012 (Gallery open Wed - Sat 2pm - 5.30pm)
Figurative, abstract and semi-realistic, Ahmed’s new exhibition incorporates vibrancy, atmosphere and colour, taking the viewer on a journey awash with ethereal images, experiencing different terrains and cultures and a unique sense of timelessness. This collection of 30 new paintings portray different stages and moods, some follow an experimental theme whilst others are reflections on travel and memories.
Acrylics, oils and watercolours are used as well as paint mixed with different materials to create various textures. Ahmed often waits for the picture to come to him, being more involved in the process of painting than the planning so figure or landscape can often emerge out of the blank canvas.
Ahmed says of his work ‘Painting is a language in itself and for this reason I do not title my work as I want to leave the viewer with the freedom to engage with the work’. To Ahmed, painting is not just a matter of mastery – it is also a matter of feeling and as well as being a painter he is an illustrator and likes sketching and quick drawing.
As a British Sudanese, Ahmed has lived in Manchester for more than 25 years and since graduating in Fine Art he has had 15 solo exhibitions, been part of many group exhibitions in the UK (Manchester, London and Cardiff), Africa and the Gulf. His work is in private collections in many parts of the world and this is his first solo exhibition in Liverpool.

Captivating by Paul Bennett
Friday 13th - Saturday 28th April 2012 - Free entry
Described as abstracted and expressional, Paul Bennett's captivating seascape and landscape paintings create a sense of intimacy and isolation whilst simultaneously leaving the subject open to interpretation.
Whilst being a great admirer of photography and photo-realism, Bennett aims above all to provoke emotional reactions rather than drawing too heavily on representational accuracy.
Bennett’s expressive brushwork and dramatic palette aims to captures the immensity and ethereal quality of weather through the use of rich textures, multiple layers and poured paint he endows his images with a tactile nature and his powerful colours capture the intensity of his chosen subject.
For Bennett, viewer engagement is of extreme importance and one of the beauties of his work is its ability to reflect the mood of the audience, emphasising his intention of enticing people to experience his visions rather than simply consume them.
These dramatic representations of the uncontrolled aspects of weather, entwined with an intense emotion are undeniably beautiful.

Lisa Cole Kronenburg - Close Up Far Away
23rd February - 17th March 2012
The subject matter of Lisa’s work has always been the distant landscape – a view of something remote and out of reach. The large, empty and often panoramic swathes of land, sky and water are a defining characteristic of her painting.
Recently a more abstract strand of work has grown alongside these paintings - loosened from the moorings of horizon line, foreground, middle ground and background these ‘other’ landscapes explore the small, fluid incidents contained withinthe land, the sky, the water.
This selection of 26 paintings shows for the first time the two styles of the artist’s work - whilst her primary focus remains the more literal landscapes, her abstract paintings reveal the natural world from a much closer range.
